• ベースの巨人。コマにピックアップ・マイクを付けて、ぺけぺけと馬鹿っぱやいフレーズを出したり、スピーカーの音を聞かせたりする今様の弾き方ではない。しっかりと弦を弾いているのであろうか、兎に角グーンと来る。それでも、結構速いパッセージを苦にしないのは流石。今や珍しい部類に入ることになったが、ビッグバンドの轟音の中でもちゃんと聞こえる、太く唸る音を出す。昔から、大名人はビッグトーン、といわれていることの生き証人。もうこんな人は出ない。
• Ray Brownは、それまでリズムとコードをキープするだけであったベースが、Jimmy Blantonによりソロ楽器としても認識されるようになり、その流れがOscar Pettiford、Slam Stewart等によって加速された時期に登場した。1944年に高校を卒業すると共に友人とバンドを組んで、ニューヨ−クを目指した所、到着したその日にDizzy GillespieとCharlie Parkerに直ちに採用された、という。Dizzy Gillespieのビッグバンド及びコンボで演奏していたが、1945年には西海岸でDodo Marmarossaと初録音を経験している。1948年には、Ella Fitzgeraldと結婚し、彼女の伴奏でツアーすると共に、51年からはJATPの興行に参加する。そしてOscar Petersonとのコンビが始まり、当初はギターにBarney Kessellか、Herb Ellisが付き合っていたが、後にドラムスに代わって、実に30年近い間、このコンビが続いた。
• ベースだから、サイドメン物はメチャ多い。その中では、Oscar Peterson Trio物は安心して楽しめるし、Milt Jacksonとの双頭クインテット物も乗れる。
